Reference Books vs Food and Water

We are doing a research paper in my English class. Now other than researching something completely useless, there is something else that just pushes my patience: reference books.

Where our money is going:

The librarian told us about half a million dollars went in to buying all of the reference books we have in our school library. Now I have nothing personal against references books, but really?! Do we really need 20 different places to find information about an author who died over 100  years ago? I don’t care if it’s Shakespeare, Hitler, or Obama – that’s rediculous.

Where our money should be going:

  • According to TheWaterProject, close to 1 billion people are plagued by dirty water. A child dies every 15 seconds due to the lack of a safe water supply. That can be changed for only $10 per person. That’s right: $10 gives a person clean and accessible water for life. If we had used that money that we spent on reference books on underprivileged people in Africa, we could have given 50,000 people clean and accessible water. 50,000 people given water.
  • One of our Christmas projects at church was raising money to give to Breedlove Foods Inc. who would turn that money into food. They were able to do it for about 5 cents a meal. Now the meal is merely a cup of thick stew, but it’s still a great blessing. Our youth group collected roughly $2,400. That small amount of money ended up supplying around 92,000 meals. Now if we had used that half a million on these meals that would end up with roughly 9 and a half million meals. 9.5 million meals handed out.

Clearly there are so many better ways to spend this money that it’s absolutely ridiculous. So it comes down to this: Are reference books more important than food and water? If you dare, look for the answer directly below…

Why Can’t We Lose Ourselves More?

After we returned from our mission trip, a friend of mine (whom requested to remain anonymous) asked if I would post something he wrote as a guest post. This it is:

homeless_man_sittingLast week I got to go to LA on a mission trip. It was the most changing thing I’ve ever done. It makes me sad to see these kids that have nothing be so happy, especially since I have everything and feel so upset. I can’t get away from the feeling of them being outside every night. I just can’t!

Why? Why must they go through this and not me? Why? While I was there, I felt like I was going to die. Now I am home and I am sad all the time. Truly sad. Even on our fun day I was sad, because I could not stop thinking about those people. It’s like I’m awake for the first time. I’ve lost myself.

Why can’t we lose ourselves more? Whenever I think about this, I think of the quote: “every man dies, but not every man lives”. I don’t think you really live until you lose yourself in Christ. Now I ask: Have you ever lost yourself? Have you ever longed for something selfless? God will give you a chance, but will you take that chance, and do something with it? Only you can answer this so think long and hard about it. A man’s reach is only as far as his grasp.

How far will you let God reach through your life? Will you let Him have the grasp of impact on your life? Get lost in God’s work.

Hippie Hill – An Experience to Remember

This post is somewhat long, but I think if you read it all the way through, you will greatly benefit. The story I am telling I wish everyone could hear.

On Thursday (day 6 of mission trip), my group visited “Hippie Hill” in Venice Beach, California. It was my favorite part

Homeless man on Venice Beach

Homeless man on Venice Beach

of the trip by far. We took fried chicken, a bunch of chips, and a lot of cokes so we could eat with the people that lived there.

Zach (one of my best friends) and I walked up to man sittin apart from the main pack. His name was David. He talked about how he had traveled the world playing bass for a group in like the 60’s. He quit that so he could raise his daughter and get her through college, so he became a computer programmer to start saving up. His daughter got through college, and his company was bought out by IBM. So he is homeless now on “Hippie Hill”. He kept telling us to not waste our lives, and to get out and do something for God. Wise man.

He needed to leave, so we went back to the main group. We were eating some pretzels, just kinda standing there, and a man walked up. He was tall and had a medium-length hair style. He also wore this orange sunglasses that made him look sharp.

He told me his name was Zappy, because he looked like someone from the 70’s. Well I complimented his sunglasses, and he let me try them on. I tried to give them back to him, but he just pulled out another pair from his backpack and said, “Nah”. That was cool. I never thought I would be getting something from a homeless man.

He started to tell us how if we believe God will take care of us, then He will! He told us stories of his 20 years on the streets, and how God had provided for him so well. He had been shot at, shanked, and had recently been hit by a car, but God provided for him every time. He even told us how he had once had a gun pointed at his head, but he wasn’t scared, because he knew God would let him live, or let him see Jesus face to face. The Crypt member pulled the trigger, and nothing happend. Zappy had been though many things like that, where God had shown grace to him.

Lastly, there was a man named Gregory. The previous day, another one of our small groups had gone to Hippie Hill and done the same thing we had. A girl named Caghan had given Gregory a book called 7 Minutes with God. When we visited, we were able to meet Gregory. He talked how he had read it, and how he had asked God to forgive him, and told us he was saved. All because of a book that had been given to him. He told us he didn’t think he had long to live because of a health condition he had recently discovered, so about 8 of us prayed with him. When we were finished, three words really spoke to me. He said, “Bless you angels”.

Hippie Hill has changed the way I will look at life.

What if the mother will die?

“What if the mother will die if an abortion is not performed?”

That is one of the exceptions that most people would use to rationalize abortion. By searching around I found that about 7.4  out of 100,000 mothers died of childbirth, but that was back in 1991. 18 years later, I am sure the number is down a significant amount.

Now if your life was threatened by a terrorist, and he told you that you must murder someone else to live, you would be in a heap of trouble if you went through with it! There would be little mercy from the general population. You would be considered scum. A selfish person who only cared about yourself.

Yet, most people consider this a valid way to rationalize abortion. It’s a tough decision, and I will never have to come close to making it; but keep that last paragraph in mind.

Greater love hath no man, than a man should give up his life for his friends.
~ John 15:13

Give thanks for Thanksgiving

Yay! We have lived another year to witness Thanksgiving 2008!

Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts.
Psalm 105:1,2 NIV

I don’t know about you, but I get to see loads of family members and people that I care about in this time of year. It’s great to see everyone that I haven’t laid eyes on till last Thanksgiving. Plus, Christmas is coming soon, which means presents!! =]

I have a lot to be thankful for:

  • Great friends
  • Great family
  • Great house
  • Great looks

Yeah I’ve got it made. He has given me sooo much!! Muches of much… even though I don’t deserve hardly any of it! Yay. All praises be to Lord God Almighty!! He is great!

Now think of all the people with less than we have… chances are, if you own a car, you are richer than 97% of the world. Pretty weird to think of it that way huh. More than 50% of the world lives on less than $2 a day. I’m sure if you are reading this you make well over that an hour. Yeah.

So let us rejoice, be glad! God has really blessed us, and given us way too much! Because we serve a GREAT God!!

Material Things

Material things don’t last.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. ~ Colossians 3:2

For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. ~ Romans 8:36

The things we hold closest to us will pass away. Money. House. Cars. It will all be gone on the Kingdom of Heaven, but happyness and love and patience will never leave us.

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him. ~ Matthew 4:18-20

Material things will only be a distraction in our walk with God, no matter how much we deny it… it’s true for us all. God has given us so much… more than 50% of the world’s population will never look at a computer screen. And if you are reading this: you are very blessed.

But let us not take our belongings and be selfish.

Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” ~ Matthew 19:20-22

We are called to be GIVERS.

But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind. ~ Luke 14:12-14

It may be difficult, but the reward is great in heaven.

If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. ~ 1 Corinthians 13:2-4

Giving for no reason is useless. Giving out of care and love is more powerful than the evils of the world.

But give what is inside the dish to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. ~ Luke 11:40-42

God rewards those who give out of love.

So I challenge you to give a little more than you normally would this week. Go out of your comfort zones and do what God has called us to do.

God bless you!
